The Qur'an
A ground-breaking, feature-length documentary by award-winning filmmaker Antony Thomas, The Qur'an asks what Islam's holiest book actually says about issues such as equality, punishment, peace, other faiths and suicide bombing. The film is part of a special week of powerful and thoughtful programmes that aim to de-mystify, as well as celebrate, the world's most talked-about religion and offer an insight into the lives and beliefs of Muslims across the globe.

Warning: "The Program contains footage of executions, the aftermath of bombing and female genital mutilations which may upset some viewers".

Re: The Qur'an
Even as an atheist, I have a certain level of respect for those who believe in their religion. Aw, who am I kidding? I often mock these people because it's just plain funny.

Re: The Qur'an
Admit it, you don't hold the same respect for white, midwestern evangelical christians. You "respect" these muslims because they are exotic brown people from poor countries.

Re: The Qur'an
The theme of this documentary seems to be, "There are many different voices to come from the Koran" That there is violence and tolerance, war and peace, ect...

Well, if you mix a quart of Vanilla ice cream with a quart of dog shit, does it make the dog shit more palatable or does it turn the ice cream into dog shit?

I don't think there is a "balance" I hold the latter to be true, don't you?

Re: The Qur'an
Thgat metaphor doesn't apply to reality.

I don't judge islam, I judge the people, and from this you can tell that not all Muslims hate america. There are specific sects that do, ie Salafism (wahhabi). But go to Syria, Egypt, Jordan, Pakistan, Lebbanon, Kosovo, etc, this is not so.

There was another point that the documentary made that I think you missed which was that Islam is profoundly similar to Christianity, and many paralells of Muslim society can be made with that of the christians (take WBC, Uganda)

Re: The Qur'an
I'm sick of this shit. This isn't talking about Jordan or Morroco or practising Muslims of today. They are talking about the words of one man who lived 1400 years ago.

Everytime you bring up how Mohammad assasinated poets who merely criticized him, or murdered apostates and adulterers, or massacred an entire tribe of Jews - Everytime you illustrate that the vast majority of the Koran is about how the unbelievers are doomed in the next life and to be persecuted in this life, - some PC left-wing dipshit calls you racist or bigoted because "not all Muslims are terrorists" or "there are bad Christians too."

Well, fuck you. Anyone who rejects sharia or believes that Jews, apostates, women, gays ect.. should be treated as political equals in all respects indefinitely is doing so IN SPITE of the Koran and the example of Mohammad. Its just a fact, deal with it.

"But what does the Koran actually say?"

Find out for yourselves. read "Blogging the Koran" from Arabic Scholar Robert Spencer, who goes over every line!

Re: The Qur'an
The gigantic problem here is NOT the amount of contradictory verses that basically cancel each other out (maybe the Qur'an, when broken down this way, actually says everything and nothing at all), but the blind faith of its' believers, and how many of them end up turning to faux leaders once again, many of them with an ulterior agenda. For you see, blind faith makes you blind (duh), and you need someone to interpret current world events for you, be it an imam, a priest, a pastor or a politician.

Case in point: A twin documentary can be done on the Bible and evangelical fundamentalists who wear t-shirts with a US flag and the slogan "Bomb Iran" or some such bullshit, electing demagogue leaders that use mass media to throw out code words in their speeches - evil, liberal, abortion, evolution, etc.

All ritualists who need artifices (veils, memorized prayers, no meat on Fridays, etc.) and icons to feel special are in fact using superstitious crutches, therefore do not get any respect from me.

Meditation, on the other hand, is a true look inside oneself, and I can deeply respect that. Maybe that's why India, for all it's defects, was elevated enough to secede from Britain peacefully and all past grievances are forgiven (think about that, it's powerful stuff), and have never really set out to conquer the fucking world. And with whom do they have an ongoing bloody dispute? You guessed it, muslims! Pakistani muslims, to be precise.

All in all, this was an enlightening, disturbing and deeply angering documentary for me. Five full stars, I consider it a great honor to be intellectually challenged by thoughtful films such as this one, every single time.
